If you live in Rochester, chances are you’ve been to Don’s Original in the historic Seabreeze neighborhood along the Lake Ontario shoreline. The iconic spot had just two owners over its 80-year history until 2024, when Alayna Alderman (the force behind the also-iconic Record Archive) and her husband Reo became the third. Alayna and I collaborated on Record Archive stuff way back (like, before the compact disc), and we got the band back together last year to put a fresh visual spin on the Don’s Original brand. Hundreds of friends, family and food-lovers gathered at the waterfront restaurant for an 80th birthday party a few weeks ago, and I snapped this photo of one of the new signs on my way in. I remember going to Don’s as a kid in the 1970s, and it was an honor (and pretty cool) to have a role in its next chapter.

I met this young couple during a shoot at Letchworth State Park last Summer. They told me they were university students from New Hampshire, and that a stop at the park was part of a whirlwind three-day trip to visit family in Buffalo. They were more than happy to pose for a few photographs, and I used the image as a two-page spread in this year’s “Explore Letchworth And Beyond” travel guide (you can see that work here).

I took this photo of my friend Tom this past Tuesday afternoon. Handsome guy, right? I know—he looks like Superman. Tom’s one of those people with a lifetime of interesting stories: he protected Doug Flutie as an offensive lineman at Boston College, hosted rock radio shows across New England in the ’80s and ’90s, and spent time living in Spain a decade ago for corporate work. Last week, a PR firm approached him at a sporting event and asked if he’d ever considered modeling (I know, hard to believe). And here we are.
This is one of the headshots I took for his portfolio. And now, if you ever need a tall, friendly, Superman-lookalike for a photo shoot, you know where to find him!

This was taken at the beautiful new tasting room at Living Roots Winery in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. We had been shooting this group outdoors on the patio for over an hour, and the temperature had risen into the upper-70s. Someone suggested we move indoors for relief from the heat, which (I assumed) would require additional lighting to illuminate the models. But I was wrong: the natural light pouring in from the large windows created this lovely silhouette.

“Don’t even think about it.” This charming guy was visiting Adaline Ice Cream in Oneonta, NY, while I was capturing images in the retail district. His mom was thrilled to have his picture taken, but he wasn’t quite as into it. I snapped a few pictures of my sullen subject, but he was far more interested in what was in his bowl than accommodating the guy behind the camera It wasn’t until I threatened to steal his ice cream that things got real.
